The Irish SME AI gap now has numbers behind it. A recent report from Trinity College Dublin and Microsoft Ireland confirms something I have been watching play out in conversations with Irish business owners for the past two years.

The AI maturity gap between large organisations and SMEs is real, it is growing, and it is already showing up in business outcomes.

The gap, in plain numbers

Large organisations are more than twice as likely to be saving 2+ hours per week per employee through AI use. 54% of large firms achieve this. Only 25% of SMEs do. At the highest level of time savings, the gap is eightfold.

92% of organisations now use or plan to use AI. So the gap is not about whether people have heard of the technology. It is about how deeply they have embedded it.

The stat that should make you stop

Organisations with a formal AI policy are ten times more likely to report major productivity gains. 30% of those with a policy report major gains. 3% of those without one do.

This is not about having the most sophisticated AI tools. It is about having a consistent, deliberate approach to using them.

Three things worth doing this month

1. Write a simple AI policy. Not a 20-page document. A one-page guide that says what staff can and cannot do with AI, what data is safe to share, and who is accountable.

2. Identify your 2-hours-a-week opportunity. Find one repetitive task that takes time and try doing it with AI. Measure the result.

3. Invest in your team’s confidence, not just your tech. The research is clear: the gap is not about tools. It is about skills, confidence, and intentional deployment.
